Pakistani got the MIT Technovator award in technology

mit technovator
Umar Saif received a very coveted award this week from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for his groundbreaking project to bring internet access to those who cannot otherwise afford it. Saif’s project is centered primarily around poor families in his home country of Pakistan where many people are struggling to afford food; let alone a computer and internet access. Saif says that he hopes his revolutionary project will unite the people with the one technology they all have; cell phones. Like so many revolutionary projects Saif says he got the idea following the earthquake disaster in Pakistan in 2005; ever since then he has been working on this internet style communication system for cell phones all around the world. The idea may not have brought full internet to the people of the region but he says it will likely be able to save thousands of lives by connecting everyone to a unified source of information.

The project is remarkably simple as well; which is part of why he received the away from MIT. Saif’s project is simply a computerized system that allows users to join the network using a cell phone number; should an emergency or other major issue break the computer will be able to easily and quickly communicate important information to anyone who has joined the cell phone social network. The best part is that the entire system works with even the oldest and most out of date phones so Saif hopes that everyone will eventually be able to benefit from this potentially life saving device.

Video Gamers Solve the Bioinformatics Problem

gamers solve puzzling science problem
For years, scientists have been dedicated to understanding and decoding a key to development in the HIV structural proteins, until recently, they have succeeded. Fortunately, just tons last week, he cracked the code under a new plan to use video games to help solve the problem. Online video game called FoldIt purpose is to help solve problems like this, and thank rapid solution to the problem of thousands of video game players spent hundreds of hours issue. The researchers said that this is absolutely amazing how fast the players can do this; from player to crack the code of less than three weeks, three years to complete the study of proteins is an absolute waste. This type of research is still very sophisticated, although previous beliefs, it will never be able to successfully prove that the work of the players, combined with the computer power of the human brain is an effective way to solve complex problems.

At this point, medical experts say, the information is simply amazing, and so many future projects is expected to be through games and other online project plan. What may be the future, but it looks like the future of medical and technological research does not seem the case may be based entirely on the power distribution through the brain and other online video game enthusiasts. Clearly, there is no computer on the Internet that everyone with brain power smart.

How Father helped his son?

father and son machine
The little boy in Argentina have been told, there is absolutely no way, he will always walk in the past 7 years. He was born, makes it impossible to control and develop, we must take his own two feet in some of the muscles and brain injury. Clearly, the boy's father refused to give up hope though, because the news came out this week, the miraculous development of the work of the machine, which will help his son walking man. The machine built-in boy's father, even though almost no technical training, he had no problem to build a working prototype, wood and bicycle parts. The boy is he can take the help of multi-machine, although the success of the boy and his father did not do in their future development plans, regardless of any money or that they may receive contributions.

This incredibly moving story spread around the world, as news of the boy. Again, although there is no funding or formal construction training, the boy's father is now a new walking machine model, and multiple copies of the prototype to help poor children around the world. This is really amazing, so few people are able to do so much to so many people around the world want nothing more than something more, he used both hands.

Google and Samsung confirm Galaxy Nexus volume bugs

galaxy nexus bug
Google and Samsung have confirmed that there are volume issues with their flagship mobile phone the Galaxy Nexus.
google and samsung press conference
It follows complaints on net forums about unexplained changes in volume.

The handset, the first to feature Google's operating system Android Ice Cream Sandwich, is currently available in the UK and is due to go on sale in the US in December.

Samsung said that it is aware of the problem and will offer a repair but did not say when.

"Regarding the Galaxy Nexus, we are aware of the volume issue and have developed a fix," Samsung said in a statement. "We will update devices as soon as possible."

Google issued an almost identical statement. Damian M summed up the problem many seem to be experiencing: "Volume drops to nothing seemingly at random, volume rocker becomes unresponsive for a few seconds," he said.

Some users reported that the issues became worse when using the 2G network. Others complained that they were unable to rely on the device.
google and samsung webcast
"Had this problem since buying the phone on the 17 Nov. Happened so far on 3G, wifi and using the sat nav. It also happened this morning again when my alarm went off," wrote one user nicknamed Stuartea.

"I was already awake and had not touched the phone yet, the alarm sounded for a second and then went silent. Thought that was weird so checked the phone and the volume was down. I can't trust the alarm to wake me up now for work!"

It is unclear at this stage whether the issues are caused by hardware or software faults. The problem comes as Apple rushes to fix a bug in its new operating system iOS 5.

Users complain that iPhone batteries are running down too quickly.

An initial software patch issued by Apple to solve the problem has not appeared to have helped.

Apple and Samsung are engaged in a fierce rivalry for market share.

Research from Strategy Analytics suggested that Samsung had overtaken Apple to become the world's biggest shipper of smartphones between July and September.

The study said that the South Korean firm had shipped 27.8 million smartphones in the three-month period, compared with 17.1 million from Apple and 16.8 million from Nokia.

Meanwhile, Samsung and Apple remain locked in intellectual property disputes around the world. Both are trying to ban sales of each other's products.

New CNG buses to be launched in Rawalpindi in March

PML-N MNA Muhammad Hanif Abbasi has assured that the longstanding issue of a proper transport system with improved and modern facilities in Rawalpindi would be resolved by March 2012.

Talking to ‘The News’, Hanif Abbasi said that Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif is aware of the problem with regard to shortage of transport in Rawalpindi. He said that the Punjab chief minister had allocated 112 CNG buses for Lahore that have started operating. The Punjab government is sincerely working on the introduction of new CNG buses in the city by March next year.

Negotiations are underway between the Punjab chief minister and the concerned transport firms, he said. He admitted that the Punjab government despite its assurances could not bring new transport system in Rawalpindi during last three years. The problem of transport shortage in Rawalpindi occurred during the previous government of Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi. However, since taking over the reign of Punjab, Mian Shahbaz Sharif started efforts to resolve this problem. However, owing to big demands by the transport firms and shortage of required buses with them the problem remained unresolved. However, the Punjab government is now itself devising an effective system to give the people of Rawalpindi a modern transport system.

Sufficient number of CNG transport would be brought out on roads of Rawalpindi, which would also cover the routes of Islamabad as well, he said.

Commissioner (Rawalpindi) Zahid Saeed also confirmed that new transport would be introduced in Rawalpindi in March next year. However, when asked to comment that why action was not taken against the public transporters including those operating coasters and Hilux wagons for violating orders of the Supreme Court, he expressed his unawareness about the verdict of the court.

The Supreme Court some 7 years ago had ordered the then city district government for allowing public transporters to operate their vehicles and provide the passengers improved and modern facilities. However, seven years have elapsed, but still no improvement is made by public transporters rather the situation has further aggravated. The commissioner told that on complaints of the people, the concerned departments like RTA and CPOs on government directions take action against the public transporters for violating the rules and regulations of the traffic laws.

He told that he would look into the orders given by the Supreme Court and take steps according to it. It may be mentioned that the people particularly office goers and students suffer great problems due to transport shortage particularly during three days when the CNG gas remains suspended. However, none of the concerned authorities including RTA or the concerned governments took any step for the last one year to give its people alternate service of transport.

Former computerization consultant Majid challenges arrest

computerization consultant majid
FORMER computerization consultant of all the education boards in Punjab, Dr Majid Naeem, has challenged his arrest by the National Accountability Bureau through a writ petition filed in the Lahore High Court.

Dr Majid Naeem through his counsel pleaded that the bureau’s investigating officer arrested him without obtaining permission from the competent authority, the chairman of the NAB. The counsel also said that the case against his client was fabricated and on based on mala fide intention. He prayed to the court to declare arrest of Dr Majid Naeem and subsequent physical remand awarded by an accountability court to NAB as illegal and without any lawful authority. The NAB arrested Dr Naeem following a reference filed against him on charges of misappropriating Rs 2,797, 850 in Punjab University’s funds and misuse of authority during his stint as Punjab University College of Information Technology principal. The court had already dismissed his acquittal application in the case. It is pertinent to mention here that the accused soon after his remand filed an application for plea-bargain (willingness to return embezzled money).

contempt notice: The Lahore High Court on Thursday issued a contempt of court notice to chief engineer of the Irrigation Department for not implementing the court order. The court issued this order on a petition of Ansar Abbas, an employee of the Irrigation Department in Faisalabad.

During the course of hearing, the judge remarked that the officer would face jail if he did not obey the court order. Such behaviour of the government functionaries is intolerable, the judge remarked. Abbas submitted that Chief Engineer (CE) Shafqat Hussain had held grudge against him and to settle score with him he transferred him. He pointed out that he challenged his transfer in LHC and the court had declared his transfer illegal four months ago. But the CE was not implementing the court’s order. He said the CE had also withheld his four month salaries. He submitted that the CE had committed contempt of court and contempt of court proceedings might be initiated against him. Justice Umar Ata Bandial will resume hearing on December 15.

CCPO ordered to book SHO: Additional District and Sessions Judge Javed Iqbal Sapra on Thursday asked the Ichhra SHO to stand in the courtroom till the arising of the court as punishment for not complying with court orders. The court also issued a show-cause notice to the CCPO directing him to register a case against the SHO under police order 2002 and submit a report in this regard. Previously, the court had directed the CCPO to appear before the court in person but, on Thursday, Ichhra SHO Inspector Waqar Ashraf appeared on the behalf of the CCPO contending that police had registered a case against accused Zahid Hussain as per court orders. On this, the court admonished the SHO and said that the court had directed the CCPO to appear in person but he did not. The court had also directed the CCPO to register a case against the SHO but the CCPO did not comply with the court order, the judge added.

cadillac xts 2013 for Car addiction

cadillac xts 2013
The 2013 Cadillac XTS has arrived, setting its sights against European luxury sports cars like the BMW 5 Series and the Audi A6.

Cadillac took the wraps off of the midsize XTS Wednesday morning at the LA Auto Show.

"Our goal in every segment we enter is not to compete in it but to be the best in it," said Don Butler, Cadillac's vice president of marketing.

The XTS, the replacement for the STS and DTS, will arrive at dealerships in the spring. It will feature Cadillac's 3.6-liter direct injection V-6 that produces 300 horsepower and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

It's a marked change for Cadillac — there won't be a V-8 under the hood.

Mark Reuss, General Motors Co.'s North American president, said the XTS will not be the only new vehicle to join Cadillac's lineup next year —the compact sports car, the ATS, will also join the fold.
cadillac xts

"The XTS and the ATS share the same objective," Reuss said, "to win in the global luxury market."
Cadillac isn't the first to automaker to produce a high-tech entertainment and information system, but intuitive, industry-first features on its upcoming offering may one-up the competition. Coming to Cadillac dealerships next year, the luxury automaker's CUE (Cadillac User Experience) system will aim to shift the way drivers interact with their vehicles, combining a fully capacitive eight-inch touchscreen with a 12.3-inch customizable LCD gauge cluster.

The CUE system will first appear in the all-new Cadillac XTS luxury sedan, which will debut at the LA Auto Show later this month before going into production next spring. Following its launch in the XTS, CUE will also be incorporated into the 2013 Cadillac SRX crossover and the upcoming BMW 3 Series-challenging Cadillac ATS. Cadillac says all vehicles in its lineup will feature CUE by 2015.

"If you're not going to be the first, you should be the best," said Greg Connor, general sales manager of Massachusetts Cadillac dealer Mastria Buick GMC Cadillac. "Cadillac has taken its time and created a system that is more than a match for the offerings from BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. CUE is going to change the way we look at vehicle interfaces as a whole."

As the first of its kind in the auto industry, the CUE's touchscreen is equipped with a proximity-sensing, haptic-feedback interface. When the screen isn't in use, it fades to reduce the chances of distraction, but the system's real trick is sensing when the driver's hand is within eight inches of the screen, bringing the screen back to life. The screen also provides pulsing feedback when touched to give users a clear indication of movement when scrolling, and zooming and swiping controls will be similar to the multi-touch motions used on smartphones.

While touch technology has been put at a premium in the Cadillac CUE, the system also makes voice commands easier than ever. CUE is able to recognize natural speech, which means that users can speak logically and use fewer commands when entering addresses for navigation or picking music playlists. When connected to a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone, Cadillac will offer Pandora and Stitcher radio integration, as well as 30 more internet apps within the first year.
2013 cadillac
Because CUE is capable of so many functions, Cadillac is able to reduce the number of physical buttons in the cockpit, creating a clean, modern appearance in line with the luxury automaker's well-received Art & Science design theme. The elements of Art & Science come to life in CUE through the customizable gauge cluster, which can display as much or as little information as desired. Drivers can view turn-by-turn directions, phone call information and music playback details directly behind the steering wheel, allowing them to keep their eyes closer to the road.
2012 xts cadillac
"Once again, Cadillac is raising the bar," Connor noted. "While some automakers have rushed to get similar hardware out just to say they have it, Cadillac has spent years refining the design and function of CUE. The result is a system that is more usable and integrated better than anything the competition offers."
The XTS also will debut Cadillac's CUE system, an ingenious telematics system that includes voice recognition and an easy-to-use touch screen. The voice recognition uses much more casual commands, meaning it will take less time to figure out how to operate it. This system, which is intuitive and impressive based from a morning of playing with it, will migrate to other Cadillacs, though no timeline has been presented.

The XTS is larger than the CTS and will provide significantly more second row space, where it has 40 inches of legroom. It also has 18 cubic feet of trunk space.

The XTS will arrive with a slew of other advanced technologies ranging from magnetic ride control suspension to adaptive cruise control, which adjusts the car's speed depending upon the vehicle in front of it.

Modern Warfare 3' Faces Off Against 'Battlefield 3'

Activision Blizzard Inc.'s "Call of Duty" and Electronic Arts Inc.'s "Battlefield" are two of the videogame industry's signature shooting-game franchises. Now for the first time in a holiday season, both games are in a firefight with one another.
On Tuesday, Activision debuts the latest version in its "Call of Duty" series, dubbed "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3." The $60 game goes head-to-head against EA's just-released "Battlefield 3," with both games expected to be among the industry's top sellers this year. In the past, the companies have released their titles at different times of the year.

In a mark of the intensifying rivalry, EA isn't shying away from trash-talking "Call of Duty." EA's campaign promoting "Battlefield 3" features TV commercials and billboards with the tagline: "Above and Beyond the Call."

"We're having some fun," said EA Labels President Frank Gibeau. "We can't completely isolate ourselves from the fact that we're shipping in the same window as 'Call of Duty.'"

Activision has avoided responding to EA's barbs. "I have absolutely no comment on it and could care less about it," said Eric Hirshberg, head of the publishing unit of Activision, which has launched a "Call of Duty" marketing blitz with ads featuring actors Sam Worthington and Jonah Hill, and basketball star Dwight Howard.

The stakes in the face-off are high. The success of the games is critical to both companies this year as the two videogame makers have shifted strategy to release fewer, better-quality games every year, said ITG Investment Research analyst Matthew Jacob.

For Activision, "Call of Duty" makes up a third of the company's $4 billion in annual revenue, said Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter. The last two games in the series, "Modern Warfare 2" in 2009 and "Black Ops" in 2010, both set sales records for the week after their release. Overall, the franchise has generated more than $4 billion in revenue.

EA has a more diversified games lineup, with hits such as the "Madden" football and "FIFA" soccer games. But it lacks a blockbuster in the shooting-game category on the scale of "Call of Duty" and needs "Battlefield 3" to flourish to make inroads in that genre this holiday season.

The two games are debuting at a time when videogame sales industrywide need a pick-me-up. In September, total U.S. game sales—including videogame console hardware and games—were $1.16 billion in the year to date, down 6% from $1.23 billion a year earlier, according to NPD Group.

Traditional videogame makers such as Activision and EA have seen their revenues stagnate as they struggle to plug into the fast-growing online social-gaming industry that Zynga Inc. has dominated. Zynga, founded in 2007, has filed for an initial public offering that could value it at $20 billion—close to the combined market capitalization of Activision and EA.

As a result, the games industry is banking on "Call of Duty" and "Battlefield" to reverse some of its fortunes. Wedbush's Mr. Pachter predicts that game releases last month, including "Battlefield 3" and "Batman: Arkham City," could increase October sales by 14% compared to a year earlier.

Indeed, "Battlefield 3," which debuted on Oct. 25, is selling strongly. EA's Mr. Gibeau said the game has had the most successful launch in the company's 29-year history, selling five million copies in the first week of its release.

But "Call of Duty" is a juggernaut. Activision has said its last two titles in the series sold about five million copies each—on the first day of their release. And while hardcore gamers will buy copies of both shooter games, most will stick to just one—likely "Call of Duty," said Wedbush's Mr. Pachter.

Mr. Gibeau conceded his rival's dominance. "At no point did I say we're going to take them out this year, but we're going to compete with them," he said.

Activision's Mr. Hirshberg said the company's only competition "is ourselves" and said that "Modern Warfare 3" was ahead of last year's record-breaking "Call of Duty" title in terms of pre-orders and other metrics. He declined to make sales predictions.

Analysts say Activision has another special weapon in its "Elite" service that goes with its game. For $50 a year, "Call of Duty" players can access a social network that keeps track of statistics like which gun players have the most success with. The "Elite" subscription also comes with downloadable maps. EA's "Battlefield 3" has similar services, but doesn't have a subscription model.

Still, some gamers say they plan to open their wallets for both games. Maria Ori, a 20-year-old college student in suburban Vancouver, British Columbia, said she'll give "Battlefield 3" a shot because she wants to play that game with one of her friends. But she's most excited about "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" because she's so familiar with the franchise.

Google's Easter eggs Beyond the barrel roll

google built-in flight simulator
Google's Easter eggs Beyond the barrel rollThe Google "do a barrel roll" search caught plenty of attention this week--but it's only one of many Easter eggs the Internet giant has hidden around the Web. The company has been doing things its own, often nerdy way for years--basing its IPO price on e, the base of natural logarithms, for example, or showing pi in the sky at 3:14 a.m. with the right iGoogle theme. Also popping up are references to classic video games, science fiction books, and Lego.

It's a nice touch that gives a bit of personality to a company that has grown to become an Internet juggernaut of formidable influence. Some Easter eggs have come and gone--the Google Maps "pegman" mascot donning a tie-dye shirt when placed on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley, for example, or the moon being made of green cheese. But many more live on. Click through to the gallery below to see a collection of many of the amusements Google has built into its products. Oh, those whimsical Google nerds. The Mountain View-based search giant may not have Apple’s design chops, but it certainly knows how to code a good joke.
google Himalayanmountains
We got a taste of that fact on Thursday with the highly popular “Do a Barrel Roll” search trick, which went viral on Twitter and brightened a million work days. But that’s only the latest in a long line of quirky features Google has embedded in its products. We’re not talking about useful stuff like the in-search calculator, or Google’s much-documented April Fool’s jokes. These are all fun built-in tricks you can amuse yourself with right now.   Here's something interesting. Stop whatever you are doing and and go to the Google homepage. Type in the words "Do a barrel" in the search box and Google will surprise you. Your Google search engine results page will itself do "a barrel roll" before presenting you with the results.

This gag is the latest in a long line of Google easter eggs. Reportedly, the inspiration behind this is from Nintendo's Star Fox, a video game series, in which a space pilot rabbit named 'Peppy' tells the character Fox McCloud to "do a barrel roll".

"Today's fun query, 'do a barrel roll' was created by a Google software engineer with the primary goal of entertaining users - while showcasing the power of CSS3, a presentation feature of modern browsers. The 'do a barrel roll' query, which causes the search page to spin, will remain in place for a while," said a Google spokesperson.

German Aerospace Report on Satellite

german satellite
Failure of the satellite into the atmosphere, the German Aerospace Center Sunday morning. "There is no confirmation, if debris reaching the Earth's surface," it said.

Up to 30 pieces of space debris hitting land or water.

Europe, Africa and Australia appear Roentgen satellite path, the agency said Saturday night. It is not clear, the satellite into the atmosphere.

"The biggest single fragment may be the telescope's mirror, which is very heat-resistant, can weigh up to 1.7 tons," according to the German Aerospace Center.

"One person injured in the possibility of re-entry is very low, the agency said."

space.com Editor, management, tower kerma Malik told CNN on Saturday night, "there is no serious threat of contamination" from the satellite.
satellite

Debris may fall about 50 miles wide (width 80 km) satellites into Earth's path at 17,398 miles (28,000 km) and the rest of the atmosphere at high temperatures, the agency said.

Officials said the satellite's orbit extends to the north and south latitude 53 degrees.

NASA said the satellite - X-ray Observatory - no propulsion system so that officials can not perform a controlled re-entry spacecraft's mission in late 1999.

NASA said the satellite is in 351 km and 363 km above the surface of the elliptical orbit between, but in June, only about 203 miles high.

Launched in June 1990, ROSAT all-sky imaging scientists for the first time X-ray telescope found the source of all the celestial X-ray radiation emitted, including some not expected to do so, said the object of NASA.

Satellite the moon, comets, stars, X-ray binaries, neutron stars, supernovae and supernova remnants, interstellar medium, galaxies, active galactic nuclei, black holes, nebulae and cosmic X-ray background, the agency said.
german+satellite

The satellite's mission is to be for the past 18 months. However, ROSAT "proved a huge success, it provides the benefits of science, as long as is technically feasible to extend the mission, the German agency said."

The delegation was finally ended in 1998 when the star tracker failed and the sun cause irreversible damage. ROSAT is February 12, 1999 closed more than 8 1 / 2 years after launch, NASA said.

U.S. Department of Defense said that more than 21,800 man-made objects re-entering Earth's atmosphere, as man-made earth satellite, launched in 1957 by the Soviet Union the world's first artificial Earth satellite tracking began.

Last month, the surviving remnants of a NASA satellite re-input more than one remote southern Pacific stretch the Earth's atmosphere and broke up during re-entry into the film and 26 to the total weight that may have reached the surface, NASA 1,200 pounds of large, said. German scientists said the failure of the satellite into the atmosphere, but whether there is any pieces falling to the earth does not have any information.

Andreas Schuetz, German Aerospace Center spokesman said, there is no indication of which country or region ROSAT satellite has begun to collapse.

Experts are now waiting for "the views from around the world," Schuetz said. Most parts of the van the size of the satellite re-entry will be burned into the atmosphere, but as many as 30 may be weighing 1.7 tons of debris crashed into the Earth's speed of up to 450 km / hour.

Re-entry time and place can not be predicted accurately, "Aviation Space Center on its Web site said in a statement." ROSAT, extending to the north and south of latitude 53 degrees in various fields under the track, may affect their re-entry. "

Falling debris can be anywhere, in a 80 km wide across the earth-orbit satellites orbit over large tracts of land, but not likely to strike in Europe, the scientists calculated.

ROSAT largest single segment may hit the Earth's heat-mirror telescope.

During its mission, in 1990, satellites orbiting about 600 km above the Earth's surface, but since retiring in 1999, it has lost its height, hovering at a distance of only 330 km in June, the German Space Agency said.
satellite fail

Roentgen satellite, orbiting the earth every 90 minutes, was used to study black holes, neutron stars and the universe of X - ray radiation. It does not own propulsion system, which is why scientists have been unable to break into a controlled re-entry.

The German Space Agency, the chances of someone being hurt somewhere satellite earth in 2000 - slightly higher than the risk of decline last month, NASA's satellite digital. But the odds of knocking anyone one is 14 trillion, 70 billion people on Earth. Vehicle size is a German satellite is expected to re-enter Earth's atmosphere over the weekend, officials said Wednesday, they rarely know which of the fragments may land.

X-ray Observatory, the Roentgen satellite, expected in October 22 and 23 returned to Earth at about 28,000 kilometers (17,000 miles) per hour speed, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) said in a statement.

DLR's re-entry before October 20 and 25 between the banks, but said they can be a little more accurate satellite close.

However, the current space debris to reach the expected time before or after the two days, DLR said.

, "It said," This period of uncertainty will be reduced by the date of re-entry method.

According to latest estimates, up to 30, weighing 1.7 tons of a single piece can reach the Earth's surface.

"The biggest single fragment may be a mirror of the telescope, which is very heat-resistant, the center said."

However, statistically speaking, very few humans from dangerous space junk, the experts said. In the sea or on an uninhabited land fragmentation will almost certainly decline.

NASA said last month, a bus-sized satellite of the Earth U.S. unpredictable Zhuixiang Africa and North Atlantic before crossing the Pacific Ocean off California fell.

Six tons of Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) fell from the sky without trace or damage to a reliable account.

Early reviews of iPod touch 4G, Ping, Apple TV and Nano

Apple on Wednesday unveiled Ping as a new music social network that could rival Facebook and Twitter, as well as a version of Apple TV that can stream movies and television shows directly from the internet

Steve Jobs, Apple’s chief executive, used a special press conference at the Yerba Buena Centre in San Francisco to outline Apple’s new approach to music and entertainment services.
“One of the biggest things we focus on with iTunes is discovery. There are more than 12 million songs to choose from, so how do you find new stuff?,” asked Jobs.

“So we’re launching Ping – it’s a social network that’s all about music. It’s like Facebook and Twitter meets iTunes. You can follow your favourite artists and friends and discover what music they like and are downloading.”

iPod touch 4G

Early reviews praise the range of functions, with Gizmodo describing it as a "killer gadget". The website said: "An iPod touch with a camera. It's a powerful proposition. The fact that it can replace a camera makes it that much more powerful of a gadget, that much more of a threat to everything else—because that means it really can replace everything in a manbag or purse but the phone—iPod, camera, notepad, gaming device, the list goes on.

"And it's everything that's great about the iPhone 4, but without the technological venereal disease that is a two-year AT&T contract. It's approachable, even to people who aren't super tech savvy—they can keep their simple, reliable phone on any carrier and use the iPod touch right along with it. That's a killer gadget."
A review on Techradar said the device was "essentially an iPhone 4, minus the phone and SMS functions".

"If you have yet to feast your eyes on the iPhone's 3.5-inch, 960 x 640 pixel resolution 'Retina' display, then you have yet to appreciate the vibrancy and quality of the images that are now available on the new iPod touch," it said.

"This is sure to be a massive boon to students and younger users that either don't want (or, more likely, are not financially able) to get tied into long-term mobile contracts, yet still want to use their iPod touch for instant messaging and video calling.

"It is, as we heard more than one punter mumble at today's London showcase, a potential game-changer. Although whether or not it will cannibalise the demand for Apple's iPhone 4 remains to be seen."
However, Delvin Coldeway at CrunchGear was less impressed by the dual camera, noting: "The specs on Apple’s page note that the new iPod touch only takes still pictures at 960×720. That’s some nonsense. If the sensor can capture 1280×720 video at 30FPS, surely it’s capable of better stills. On the other hand, If the sensor is only capable of 960×720 images and they’re just stretching it to 1280×720, I’m going to have an image quality hissy fit."

Now Blackberry is Banned in India

A ban had been threatened from Tuesday, as India said its security services needed greater access to encrypted services.
It wants the ability to monitor secure e-mail and instant messaging services provided by the firm. RIM has said it will support the country's need for "lawful access". But it maintains that it does not do "specific deals" with countries. The firm said earlier that it had offered to "lead an industry forum focused on supporting the lawful access needs of law enforcement agencies". It said that the forum - which would include other telecoms firms - would work with the Indian government to develop "policies and processes aimed at preventing the misuse of strong encryption technologies".
India, along with many other countries, believes the device and the Blackberry infrastructure used by business customers are a threat to national security.

The country fears the device could be used by militants and insurgents in a repeat of the 2008 attack on Mumbai that left 166 people dead. Blackberry handsets automatically scramble messages and send them to servers in Canada and other countries. Authorities have said they want access to these messages and the keys to decrypt them in order to counter terrorism and criminal activity. But RIM has said that it "does not possess a 'master key', nor does any 'back door' exist in the system that would allow RIM or any third party, under any circumstances, to gain access to encrypted corporate information". It said that "singling out and banning" Blackberry would be "ineffective and counter-productive" as many other networks used similar encryption techniques.

The firm said finding a solution to meet the needs of governments and prevent the misuse of encryption was an industry-wide problem.

Bloom box Battery

Researchers from MIT and University of Maryland have created the cathode and anode for a lithium ion battery from two different viruses. Researchers at Maryland used a virus that grows on tobacco plants, to create a lithium ion battery.

Researchers from MIT created some wearable lithium ion batteries that could just be sprayed onto clothing, thereby you have power with you, anywhere and everywhere you go… from cell phones to vehicles, for just about anything [don't worry, a small box (the prototype shown was a Bloom box battery, the wearable batteries haven't been showcased yet) of the size of a big loaf of bread could generate enough electricity for a 5000 sq ft hall]. Even better is it’s the most eco-friendly solution around.

Facebook alternative Diaspora eyes launch date

An open alternative to Facebook will be launched on 15 September, the developers of the project have said.Diaspora describes itself as a "privacy-aware, personally-controlled" social network. The open-source project made headlines earlier this year when Facebook was forced to simplify its privacy settings, after they were criticised for being overly complex and confusing.
The project, developed by four US students, raised $200,000 (£140,000).
"We have Diaspora working, we like it, and it will be open-sourced on September 15th," the team wrote on their blog. The team said they had spent the summer "building clear, contextual sharing".
"That means an intuitive way for users to decide, and not notice deciding, what content goes to their co-workers and what goes to their drinking buddies. We know that's a hard [user interface] problem and we take it seriously."
The project was started by three computer scientists and one mathematician from New York.
Their idea of building it gained momentum earlier this year during an intense period of criticism of Facebook, the world's largest social network
"We want to put users back in control of what they share," Max Salzberg, one of the founders, told BBC News at the time.
The team turned to the fundraising site Kickstarter to raise the $10,000 they thought they would need to build the network.

Scientists cracked wheat's genetic code

British scientists say '' We've cracked wheat's genetic code''
They've decoded the genetic sequence of wheat and are posting the data online.
The plant is among the world's most important crops and the researchers say the information could help farmers create disease-resistant strains of the global food staple.
University of Liverpool Scientist Neil Hall says the wheat genome was far longer than the human genome first unraveled 10 years ago. But he says the techniques used to decode genetic information have improved considerably, meaning the process took only about a year.
Hall and others worked on a strain of wheat known as Chinese Spring. Hall said Friday that his team would soon work to decode other varieties.

Superbug gene cases in Austria

Austria's health ministry is reporting two cases of a new gene that allows bacteria to become a superbug.
The ministry says experts at the medical university in the southern city of Graz detected the gene, known as NDM-1, in two people, both of whom are believed to have been infected in hospitals abroad.
A statement Friday said a person from Pakistan was released in good health from Graz's university clinic last year after successful treatment. It said another person from Kosovo is still under medical supervision there.
Researchers say the gene — which appears to be circulating widely in India — alters bacteria, making them resistant to nearly all known antibiotics.

U.K Defence companies concerned over Trident replacement

Defence manufacturers have asked David Cameron to clear up confusion over how the replacement for Britain's nuclear deterrent will be funded.
The chairman of the industry body ADS, Ian Godden, said uncertainty over the Trident missile system was unsettling both investors and the UK's allies.
There are concerns as to what way the successor to Trident would impact on wider defence spending.
Trident is due to be replaced in the 2020s at an estimated cost of £20bn.

BBC defence correspondent Caroline Wyatt said the Conservatives' commitment to a like-for-like replacement has not been shared by the Liberal Democrats, who promised in their manifesto to seek a cheaper alternative.

Toyota Corolla and Matrix cars

Toyota has announced another recall involving more than one million cars in the US and Canada with potentially faulty engine control systems. The models affected are the Corolla and Matrix made between 2005 and 2008.TheJapanese carmaker said three unconfirmed accidents were "alleged to be related" to the problem, one of which resulted in a "minor injury".
Last month, Toyota recalled 700,000 cars worldwide and has now recalled about 10 million in the past year. The two recalls in July were due to steering and engine problems, while those earlier in the year were because of sticking accelerator pedals.

Engine failure

The latest recall involves 1.1 million cars sold in the US and Canada. The problem with what Toyota calls the models' engine control module may result in a crack in solder points or on some electronic componentry.

Garmin Nuvi Recall

Garmin has discovered certain Nuvi devices, contain a specific printed circuit board design that cause the device to overheat creating a potential fire hazard. This concern applies to a set of units produced within a defined date range. There have been no injuries related to this problem, but because of Garmin’s dedication to safety, they are issuing this voluntary recall.
“The recalled devices include a small subset of the following nüvi model numbers:
  nüvi 200W, 250W, & 260W
nüvi 7xx (where xx is a two-digit number)
