A total of 25,579 unemployed sanctioned in 2011, a decrease of 7% compared to 2010
A study by the National Employment Office, we learn that the exclusions for breaches of unemployment in search of employment fell 3.8% in 2011. In 2010, there were 5,666 exclusions in 2011 against 5450. In 2009, the National Employment Office had identified 6,601 excluded, the highest since 2005, when the system came into force.

Exclusions are more numerous in Wallonia with 3276 excluded, in Flanders, there were 1317 excluded and Brussels, 857. Minister for Employment, Monica De Coninck (sp. a), this reduction is good news because the purpose of the system is not reaching exclusion but rather to force the unemployed to realize that it must be more proactive in their job search. The Minister also believes that to help the unemployed under Wallonia should be successful in the coming months. Moreover, the study states that the total number of sanctions decreased by 7%, or 25,579 unemployed sanctioned in 2011.

The study by the National Employment Office also suggests that the threat of punishment is an engine for job search. 16% of unemployed receiving the first warning letter react and find a job within six months although it is unclear whether there is a causal link between the two events.

Furthermore, 21.8% of the unemployed find a job after a third interview negative. Finally, only 2.5% of the unemployed whose evaluation is positive finds a job.
