PRIME Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani has once again spoken of conspiracies being hatched against democracy and warned that the present government will foil all such attempts and protect the democratic system. Addressing a public meeting in Mardan the other day, Mr Gilani vowed that the PPP would protect democracy and not allow the undemocratic forces to derail the system.
‘We believe that all the political forces in the country support democracy and they are working for it in line with their own policies and thinking. It is the beauty of democracy that every one enjoys the freedom to express his viewpoint and the major political parties are doing so. Naturally there will be criticism of government, because in a democratic set up it is always at the receiving end because it cannot meet all the expectations of the masses. Some of the issues that are strongly agitating the minds of the people are unending load shedding, price hike, poverty, unemployment and security. Though the government claims that it gave a people friendly budget and reduced the prices of POL products but one is justified to question what benefit these measures have given to the people? Prices of essential commodities and even transport fares remain the same and people are openly saying that the cut in POL prices will only benefit the transporters who have strong lobbies in the corridors of power. The Prime Minister talked about conspiracy against democracy but we would say there are conspiracies of all sorts all around and those behind them want to achieve their targets and none is worried about the people and the country. We strongly believe that no conspiracy against democracy will succeed if the system and the government deliver to the people according to their expectations. But when a system fails to deliver, people would get disenchanted and that provides an opportunity to anti democratic forces to intervene. As for the political parties in the opposition are concerned, they would not conspire against democratic system because they know that today’s opposition could be a government of tomorrow. Therefore we would say that there are several genuine grievances of the people, which the government must pay special attention to address in the remaining limited time at its disposal if it wants to go to the people with some achievements at its credit.
