India, Pakistan still talking on troop pullout from Siachen


Defence Minister Syed Naveed Qamar Sunday revealed that negotiations between Pakistan and India were currently in progress for the withdrawal of troops from Siachen, adding that an improved strategy was being formulated in this regard.

The minister was addressing media persons at Tando Muhammad Khan after inaugurating various road and village electric supply schemes.Syed Naveed Qamar said Siachen possessed the unique status of being the world’s highest border, while having no population in the area.

Secretary-level deliberations were recently held and it was hoped that both countries would succeed in formulating a comprehensive strategy for the withdrawal of troops from the area, he added.

In response to a question about the Arsalan Iftikhar case, Naveed Qamar said that following the directives of the Supreme Court, the government had formed a legal committee that would submit its report after completing its investigation.

He added that opponent political parties were trying to politicise the issue with the aim of gaining the sympathies of the people for the next general elections, and added that the nation was fully aware of the tactics of the government’s enemies.

Regarding the Zulfikarabad project, the defence minister said that the project was designed to facilitate the people of Sindh, and that the establishment of a new city would open the doors of progress and prosperity vis-à-vis employment for the people of the area.

He added that the Zulfikarabad project would surely bring a revolution of economic development in the province, and that the establishment of more cities would provide better civic facilities to the residents.

Regarding the role of nationalist organisations, the defence minister was critical and said that such agencies were only misguiding the people of the province.

On the subject of PIA, the minister said that the government had appointed a new chairman, and it was hoped that new policies would bring about a significant improvement in the PIA’s performance.

In response to a question about the restoration of Nato supplies, Syed Naveed Qamar said that all decisions in this respect would be made by the government whilst keeping in view the country’s national interest.Earlier, the defence minister inaugurated the electrification of Razi Khan Chandio and Chakkar Jamali, as well as link road schemes in Qasim Sand and Haji Ahmed Sand.
