A local leader of a Pakhtun-based political party killed himself to avoid being arrested in an early Sunday raid on Rabia City area of Gulistan-e-Jauhar, sparking violent riots in Pakhtun-dominated localities against the eerily death.Police officers said Liaquat Bangash alias Liaquat Tension had involvement in several crimes, including targeted killing. The officials dispelled the concerns that the Pakhtun leader was poisoned, saying that the autopsy report (which was reserved) showed he jumped from (or fell off) a building and died. They, however, did not divulge his political affiliation, adding that two law enforcers on the raiding team were wounded as a result of the firing by unidentified gunmen. According to Additional Inspector General Ghulam Shabbir Sheikh, Bangash died after jumping from the roof of Rabia City, to avoid his arrest during the raid. The senior official told a press conference at the office of South Zone SSP Asif Ejaz Sheikh that when the police party rushed towards the body, a group of unidentified men opened fire at it.The incident sparked riots in Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Safoora Goth, Pehalwan Goth, Lasbela, Patel Para and Old Sabzi Mandi area, where unidentified gunmen went on shooting sprees, wounding three people. In their protest, Bangash’s supporters alleged that it was a killing. Routine life and commercial activities came to a standstill. A massive contingent of the Sindh Rangers and police was called out to ease the growing tension.Police officials meanwhile claimed to have arrested two men for restoring to firing. Doctors at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre said they were awaiting chemical examination reports from a laboratory. Meanwhile, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Interior, Rehman Malik, said the other day that operation was not being conducted in Lyari but targeted actions are being carried out against criminals in different areas of the metropolis. The advisor said that law and order was being improved gradually due to joint efforts of police and rangers and hoped that it would be better in coming days. He said the government was utilising all resources to improve law and order in the economic hub of the country. To a question, Malik said that the government had nothing to do with Arsalan Iftikhar case, it was between two individuals. He said that the apex court had expressed confidence in government machinery by referring the case to the attorney general of Pakistan for investigation.
