Heavy rain which lashed the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad as well as Murree improved the level of water in Rawal Dam, which was touching almost dead level because of dry spell.
Water and Sewerage Agency (Wasa) spokesman Umar Farooq said that over 358 acre feet of water level increased with the recent heavy downpour on Friday night. The dried out spaces are now again covered with water and similar kind of more rains would fill the dam to its full capacity, he said.
However, he said that though a great part of dam had gone dried, yet there was still stock of water in it for another 75 days for supply to the consumers even if there had been no rain. With rains stock of water for another four days has increased, he said.
However, the heavy downpour did not create any significant effect in Khanpur Dam. The level of water in this dam is still recorded at 7 feet, which is sufficient only for next 10 days. Khanpur Dam water is shared by Rawalpindi Cantonment Board, Chaklala Cantonment, Wasa and CDA.
The situation of water level in Khanpur Dam would improve when there are heavy rains in Abbottabad and its adjacent areas. Rains in Rawalpindi do not create any impact on Khanpur Dam, RCB Senior Engineer Atique ur Rahman said.
Despite decrease in level of water in Khanpur Dam, RCB is managing the situation of water quite efficiently in the areas falling under its jurisdiction, he said. He said, “We are getting 11 million gallon water daily through Rawal lake resource.” He did not agree to a question that the supply of water has been reduced to the consumers. “We are providing water on daily basis and without reducing any timing,” he said.
